Galesburg Community Unit School District #205 and Legat Architects were honored last night at the Illinois American Institute of Architects (AIA) Annual Conference, receiving statewide recognition for design excellence.
The District’s Bright Futures Pre-K Center was named the state winner for Excellence in Interiors Projects – 5,000 and Over, a distinction celebrating outstanding achievement in architectural design and innovation.
Selected by a panel of esteemed architects from across the nation, the Bright Futures project was recognized for its exceptional integration of design, form, and functionality to create a space that inspires learning and growth. Judges commended the project not only for its aesthetic and educational value, but also for its commitment to sustainability. The facility was creatively repurposed from a structure that once housed both a church and a department store—transforming an existing community space into a vibrant, modern environment for early learners.
“This recognition reflects the power of collaboration and vision,” said Superintendent Dr. John Asplund. “Together with Legat Architects, we created a space that reflects the heart of our mission—to provide safe, inspiring, and sustainable learning environments for our youngest students.”
